Camarones a la Mexicana
Ingredients:
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1/2 medium onion, chopped
- 1 green bell pepper, chopped
- 2 serrano chiles, finely chopped (optional)
- 1 clove garlic, chopped
- 1 pound medium shrimp, peeled and deveined
- 3 roma tomatoes, chopped
- 1 can El Pato Mexican tomato salsa (or any brand of tomato salsa)
- Fresh cilantro
Directions:
Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the onion, bell pepper, and serrano chiles; saute for 3 to 5 minutes until slightly tender. Add the garlic and shrimp and let cook, stirring occasionally, until the shrimp turn pink. Stir in the tomatoes, the can of tomato salsa, and a couple sprigs of fresh cilantro; season lightly with salt. Once the mixture starts to boil, reduce heat to and cover skillet. Let simmer for 10 to 15 minutes until sauce has thickened slightly. Serve with Sopa de Arroz Blanco. Enjoy!
*Omit the serrano chiles if you're not a fan of spicy food.

ReplyDeleteTakes me back to Louisiana. Looks like shrimp creole.
ReplyDeleteIs El Pato just a brand name? Will any jar of salsa do?
ReplyDeleteOoh -- yum. ..and I have a can of El Pato in the cupboard and a bag of shrimp in the freezer. I am set. :)

ReplyDeleteI love the look of this, amazing, another one to try.
ReplyDeleteStill awaiting an answer to my question: Is El Pato a brand name? I have asked both my wife and my sister-in-law here if they have heard of it. They have not. I´m thinking perhaps it´s a regional thing.
ReplyDeleteFelipe: To answer your question, El Pato is a brand name. It is a canned salsa that is a cross between a salsa and a tomato puree. But any jarred, canned or even homemade salsa will work with this recipe.
ReplyDeleteI was just about to make this dish when I noticed something awry. In the instructions, you mention adding the tomatoes, but there are no tomatoes in the ingredients list. What´s a guy to do?
ReplyDeleteFELIPE: So sorry about the omission. I will fix it immediately. :) Hope you made the camarones anyway! :)
ReplyDeleteYes, I tossed in two chopped roma tomatoes. It worked. Strangely, I believe this is the second time I have made the dish, and I sure did not notice the tomato issue before.
ReplyDeleteIt was quite tasty. Gracias.
I love this site. Thank you for all the amazing food!!
