Oboy, do I love atole! When I was young, my uncle was a preacher at his church. We were there during the week and weekends. We heard the sermons and prayed, and little as I was, I felt the spirt when my uncle healed my earaches. The earaches went away. Way down below the church was a basement where everyone congregated to after the services. My brothers and I looked forward to this because to us it was the BEST time of church. Tee hee. Big and I do mean big pot of atole, another pot of tamales, warmly made tortillas, pan dulce and man o life were these things a treat. Ah, memories and thanks for sending me there. I have some butter nut squash from the garden and I will try it out with that after I bake them. I'm a little better now and I'll put them in the oven tonight. Thanks Leslie, your a pal for bringing my memories back. Have a great weekend and take care.
ReplyDeleteI have never heard of this before. It looks delicious! I have only just found myself cooking sweet things with pumpkin since I started blogging. Thanks for introducing me to something new!
ReplyDeleteBest wishes,
Natasha.
Okay, dumb question time again. I thought Atole was made with ground corn(masa). So what makes Atole, Atole? AAAAnd. Green pumpkin? Is it unripe? If fully mature what kind is it? That's all for now, but give me time I think of some more. LOL Judy
ReplyDeleteBe still my heart!
ReplyDeleteOkay first off, this is not quite what I thought it was but still yummy sounding. My gma and mom make atole, but with rice in it and just cinnamon. We call it atole de rice (not arroz) ha ha! and it is so good. I just had some the other night because my mom made it and it was extra cinnamony!
I'd definitely drink a ton of this too.
Also, LOVE that mug- so pretty!
This look wonderful. It's something worth trying.
ReplyDeleteHave a blessed weekend :D
I am going to try it, my husband will be very happy if I master an atole for him and he loves pumpkin!

GLORIA: I'm so glad this recipe brought back wonderful childhood memories. I hope you like this not-so-traditional atole.
ReplyDeleteNATASHA: Thank you so much for visiting my blog.
JUDY: Most atoles are thickened with cornstarch, rice or oats. This atole can be thickened with a little cornstarch as well, but we prefer the consistency that the pumpkin offers.
The small green pumpkin is only green on the outside. Inside it is a lovely bright orange. I used a larger light orange pumpkin/squash for this recipe and it had a very pale orange flesh. I would love to find a big, bright orange pumpkin like the ones found in the States. :)
If you have anymore questions, I am more than happy to answer them. :)
MONICA: Oooh! I love atole de rice! :) This recipe isn't very traditional, but it sure is delicious. :)
MARI: It's always nice to hear from you. I hope you have a blessed weekend as well.
MEXY: I hope you and your Hubby like it!
It's 4:00 in the morning here. Couldn't sleep so I made your atole. Leslie this is wonderful on an early cold fall morning. Thanks so much. I may just drink it all and jump back in bed.
ReplyDeleteFound you over at Glori's blog and I have to say, your recipes bring back some wonderful memories. I'm not crazy about Atole or Horchata, but your Atole pie sounds wonderful...who knows, I just might slip this one in my Thanksgiving dessert repertoire!! Looking forward to seeing more great recipes.
ReplyDeleteGracias,
Georgina
Cant wait to make this today, I have tons of pumpkin puree and want to make another cheese cake but even that wont use it all.
ReplyDeleteCame over from Gloria's to see the Atole!! Glad I did, sounds just wonderful!! I too, will try it with squash. Kerrie
ReplyDeleteBEVERLY: I'm so glad you liked the atole!
ReplyDeleteGEORGINA: Thank you so much for visiting. Any friends of Gloria's is a friend of mine. :)
AMANDA: I hope you like it as much as I do. :)
KERRIE: Thank you for visiting. This atole is just as good with squash. :)
This looks really delcious! I would have never ever thought of making a pumpkin atole.
ReplyDeleteI had never heard of atole until I read this post this morning. Now I'm going to waste my day thinking about making it tonight. This seems like one of those things you can serve at a party and everyone would just be like 'whoa! I've never had this before, and it's awesome!' and you tell them it's pumpkin atole, and they're all impressed with how cultured you are.
ReplyDeleteAt least, that's how I'm imagining it ...
Yeah Leslie!
ReplyDeleteMy fav is el atole de champurrado, but I got to tell you that this looks very delicious! Have you ever tried "empanadas de calabaza"? they also are tasteful.
Have a nice day!
Leslie...looks so yummy...and yes, as with many of your wonderful recipes, I will be trying this. Thank you so much for all your wonderful post. Hope all is going well with you.
ReplyDeletenow this sounds like a soothing warm drink that is pure comfort - nothing but fall.... love it

ReplyDeleteoh yeaaahhhh... you had me at pumpkin. this drink looks so amazing i am going to have to go out and get a pumpkin this weekend to make this atole. btw, is this a leslie creation or a common drink this time of year?? either way, i'm in love and i haven't even tried it yet.
ReplyDeleteCAROLYN G: This atole really is delicious. :)
ReplyDeleteRICH: I hope you made this atole. I know I go a little crazy just thinking about making this delicious drink once Fall rolls around. :)
ANISFAIRY: Mmmmmm! Champurrado! It will always be my favorite. But this atole is a close second. :)
DESERT DREAMING: Thank you! All is well with me and mine. Thank you for asking. How are you?
DRICK: You're right. This drink is a steaming cup of comfort! :)
MAMA CUPCAKE: Wait 'til you taste it!
ALICE: This is completely a Leslie creation! Hubby gave me the idea when I was making a pumpkin pie for our first Halloween together. While I had everything in the blender, Hubby commented that the pumpkin mixture looked good enough to drink. So as soon as I popped the pie in the oven, I made the atole for the very first time! :)
Atolé reminds me of mi esposos abuelito!! He has the best stories of him drinking it piping hot just from the pot...steaming wafting up...slurping it in...love it! Your pumpkin pie version sounds perfect for the season :D
ReplyDeleteMmmmm, sounds wonderful. You're right perfect for a cold night.
ReplyDelete~ingrid
I never would have thought to add pumpkin puree to atole. This sounds delicious!
ReplyDeleteNo sugar?
ReplyDeleteANONYMOUS: Oops! I don't know how I missed the sugar! Thank you so much for pointing it out. I've added the sugar to the list of ingredients. :)
ReplyDeleteOh thanks for responding. Do you have any recipe that does not have sugar and flour can't have either. Love your recipes.
